Give Your Car A Great Summer!

In Four Simple Steps

By Keith Smith

It's that time of year when vacations are being planned or trips undertaken.  During busy times such as these, it's easy to forget that your vehicle is the way many of you will get to your destination!   Here's a quick Summertime Checklist you can follow that will ensure your vehicle has a great summer too!

1.  Begin a regularly scheduled maintenance program.  Perhaps one of the most important things you can do for your vehicle is to perform the recommended scheduled maintenance.  Changing your oil, checking things such as all the fluids, filters, tire pressure and alignment can not only improve your fuel mileage but will also extend the life of your vehicle.  Regular inspections of your brake system, battery, and alternator as well as checking for any fluid leaks will keep you safer and less likely to be sitting on the side of the road far from home.  Early detection will prevent excessive damage to your vehicle and save you a lot of money in repairs.

2.  Increase your fuel economy by following these simple tips.  Avoid excessive idle time.  No one likes to climb into a scorching hot car in the summer, but allowing your vehicle to idle too long will decrease your fuel economy considerably.   Avoid "launching" your vehicle from a stop.  Accelerate normally when coming from a stop and then drive within the speed limit. If you're traveling on the interstate, using your Speed Control will save you gas!  Also, have your vehicle tuned-up regularly.

3.  When having your vehicle serviced it is very important to have it serviced by qualified technicians.  While some people feel a dealership is a more expensive option for maintaining their vehicle, it is actually an economical one, especially in the long run.  Dealership technicians receive more extensive training and typically have more sophisticated tools and equipment at their disposal than other automotive repair shops.  Dealerships also have the parts that meet factory specifications.  The old adage is true in that "You get what you pay for".

4.  Have your vehicle thoroughly inspected at least once every three months.  For example, Jack Kain Ford performs a thorough, multi-point inspection on every vehicle that visits our service department.  Everything from lights, brakes, fluids and tires to any recommended service your vehicle is due for, our inspection will give you the valuable information you need to care for your vehicle during this coming year. Remember, that the most damaging thing you can do to your car is nothing!  Everyone at Jack Kain Ford wishes you, and your vehicle, a great summer!
